Good News, Everyone!

I’ve completed what many would consider to be the 4 most important years in a person’s life. Finishing college was a bittersweet moment for me. I’m glad to be progressing to the next level in life, yet I know that I will miss my friends, teachers, and the academic learning process. Thankfully, my career path will require me to be a student for life; always learning , growing, and gaining new skills and experiences. What better way is there to continue that learning than to do it 40 hours a week with pay and benefits?

I am happy to announce that I have landed my first full-time job!

Not many people can have the opportunity of a full-time job right out of college, especially doing what they would consider their dream job. I consider myself to be incredibly fortunate to have exactly that opportunity. Well, almost exactly…

The position that I have been hired for is 3D Architectural and Control Systems Modeler. I will be working for a company called Control Graphics which is based in my hometown of Indianapolis (which makes this job even more incredible, but more on that later).  Control Graphics creates 3D models and animations for architecture and various electrical/mechanical systems. With the use of specialized software, these 3D models and animations are then used by architects, contractors, electrical/mechanical engineers, etc. to help design 3D layouts of various control systems and blueprints.

Although this is not my dream job of being a 3D Environment Artist in the video game industry, I feel that this opportunity will be directly influential as I pursue that goal. Working for Control Graphics will allow me to improve my 3D modeling, texturing,  and animating skills, specifically regarding hard-surface models and mechanical animations. This is perfect for me since I don’t really wish to be a character or organic modeler/animator.

The other important aspect about this job is the location. Indiana, like most of the other midwestern states, isn’t usually a hotspot for computer graphics-related jobs. Despite that, this position with Control Graphics appeared at just the right time and in just the right place. I won’t have to worry about the expenses and stress of moving to a different state, I get to stay close to my friends and family, and I don’t have to worry about learning a new city while starting a new job.

Everything is going better than I could have possibly hoped for.

From this point forward, I begin a new chapter in my life. I am leaving the academic world behind and moving on into the grown-up world, where I’ll have grown-up things to do and grown-up responsibilities to cherish.

I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.
